
Finding unidentified droppings in your garden or near a compost pile often leads to suspecting a rodent. However, snake droppings frequently go unnoticed or are confused with those of a bird, a marten, or a small mammal. Their particular appearance, linked to a digestive system very different from that of mammals, provides reliable clues for recognizing them in the field.
Whitish urates: the field criterion that classic guides ignore
Most articles dedicated to animal droppings focus on the feces of rats, mice, or martens. Snakes are rarely mentioned, and a crucial anatomical detail is often absent from this content: snakes excrete urine and feces through a single opening, the cloaca, just like birds.

In practice, this results in a droppings that has two distinct parts. The first, dark, is the fecal matter itself. The second, white or chalky, corresponds to the urates, which is the solid equivalent of urine. This whitish plug is often found at one end of the droppings, sometimes distinctly separated from the fecal part.
This dual appearance (dark + chalky white) is the most reliable marker for distinguishing snake droppings from those of mammals. Rat or mouse droppings never have this white portion. Bird droppings, on the other hand, may resemble it, which necessitates cross-referencing this criterion with other clues.

Shape and content of snake droppings according to species
The snakes present in mainland France (grass snakes, viperine snakes, green and yellow snakes, vipers) produce droppings whose size and consistency vary according to their size and diet. However, the general shape remains consistent: an elongated mass, often irregular, rarely segmented as would be the case with a marten or hedgehog dropping.
Visible fragments in the feces
A snake dropping frequently contains undigested remains. Depending on the prey ingested, one may observe:
- Aggregated hairs, sometimes in small compact tufts, when the snake has consumed a rodent or a small mammal
- Tiny bone fragments, partially dissolved by gastric juices but still identifiable to the naked eye
- Fish scales or amphibian shell debris in semi-aquatic snakes (grass snake, viperine snake), especially in spring and early summer near ponds and waterways
The presence of hairs in an elongated dropping ending with a white plug is a very clear signal. No bird produces this type of combination.
Seasonal variations to know
The appearance of droppings changes with the season and environment. Semi-aquatic snakes that feed on amphibians in spring produce softer, very dark droppings rich in aquatic prey fragments. In late summer and autumn, when these same species migrate to drier areas and consume more rodents, the feces become more compact, drier, with hair inclusions.
This seasonal variability explains why the same species can leave droppings that appear very different just a few months apart. Field reports from reptile inventories conducted by French naturalist associations confirm this observation.
Common confusions with other animal droppings
Correctly identifying a snake dropping requires ruling out the most common candidates. Three confusions frequently arise.
Snake or bird
Bird droppings also have a white part (urates). The difference lies in the consistency: bird droppings are generally liquid or semi-liquid, splattered on a surface. A snake dropping retains a coherent, elongated shape, deposited on the ground without splatter. The location also helps: a dropping found under a perch, branch, or roof edge points towards a bird.
Snake or small mammal
Droppings from martens, rats, or hedgehogs are most often confused with those of snakes. The distinguishing criterion remains the complete absence of urates in mammals. A marten dropping may contain hairs and pits, but it never has a chalky white plug. Rat droppings are oval, grouped, of uniform color (dark brown to black), without a light portion.

Snake or lizard
Lizards share the same cloacal system as snakes. Their droppings also contain urates. The distinction mainly relies on size: lizard droppings are significantly smaller, often just a few millimeters for common species (wall lizard, green lizard). Beyond one centimeter in length, the likelihood of it being a snake increases compared to that of a lizard, except in the case of large lizards like the ocellated lizard in southern France.
Where to look and what precautions to take
Snakes most often defecate near their resting or hunting area. The edges of compost bins, dry stone walls, wood piles, and pond borders are common locations. A poorly maintained compost heap, which attracts rodents, creates a hunting ground for grass snakes, and thus a likely site for dropping deposits.
If discovered, some precautions are necessary. Do not handle the droppings with bare hands. Reptile droppings can harbor salmonella and other pathogenic bacteria. A disposable glove and a plastic bag are sufficient for removal.
The presence of snake droppings in a garden does not call for drastic measures. Grass snakes, protected by law in France, actively regulate rodent populations. Identifying their traces mainly allows for better coexistence with them, understanding where they move and what they consume.
