Charanagar is a documentary theatre project being developed in a collaboration with Budhan Theatre, a street theatre company organized by an adivasi (indigenous) community in the city of Ahmedabad, India. We are working with Dakxin Bajrange, a Chhara playwright, and together we envision a site-specific project modeled on the motif of the guided tour, wherein spectators are led through a walking tour of Chharanagar, encountering oral testimonies and installations. This project will restage Chharas’ shared history as a notified Criminal Tribe detained in a labour camp in Ahmedabad in 1932, where they were put to work in the industrial production of textiles. Charanagar is an experiment in reanimating cultural memory, and will make a direct contribution to Chharas’ community organizing. The project is being designed to construct an important counter-public to further the moral and legal rights of disenfranchised adivasis.
